Marla Size in Pakistan: 225, 250 or 272.25 Square Feet?

Two people can both own a “5 marla” house and have very different amounts of land. The reason is that the marla itself is not one fixed size in Pakistan.

Marla Size in Pakistan: 225, 250 or 272.25 Square Feet?

The three marla sizes you will meet

  • 272.25 sq ft — the old revenue (patwari) marla, used in land records and many rural areas. With this size, 1 kanal is 5,445 sq ft and 8 kanal make one acre.
  • 225 sq ft — used by most planned housing societies, including DHA Lahore and many others. A 1-kanal plot is 4,500 sq ft (500 sq yd).
  • 250 sq ft — used by some societies and development authorities.

In every system, 1 kanal = 20 marla. Only the size of one marla changes.

Why it matters

A 10-marla plot is 2,250 sq ft with the 225 sq ft marla, but 2,722.5 sq ft with the revenue marla — a difference of almost 500 sq ft. That changes the covered area you can build, the price per square foot and the property value used for tax.

How to know which marla applies to you

  1. Check your plot file, allotment letter or registry — the area is usually written in square feet as well as marla.
  2. Ask the society office which marla size it uses.
  3. For agricultural or old residential land, the revenue record (fard) normally uses the 272.25 sq ft marla.

Quick conversion table

  • 5 marla: 1,125 sq ft (225) · 1,250 sq ft (250) · 1,361 sq ft (272.25)
  • 10 marla: 2,250 · 2,500 · 2,722.5 sq ft
  • 1 kanal: 4,500 · 5,000 · 5,445 sq ft
  • 1 acre: always 43,560 sq ft — 8 kanal with the revenue marla
