BMI Calculator

Check your body mass index in seconds. Enter your weight in kilograms and your height in feet and inches or centimetres. See your BMI with both the international and the South Asian cut-offs, and a healthy weight range for your height.

How to use the BMI Calculator

  1. Enter your weight in kg.
  2. Choose feet and inches or centimetres.
  3. Enter your height.
  4. Read your BMI and the healthy range for your height.

Formula

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)² 1 inch = 0.0254 m

Example

A person 5 ft 7 in tall (1.70 m) weighing 70 kg has a BMI of 24.2. That is normal on the WHO scale, but overweight on the South Asian scale, where the healthy range is below 23.

BMI ranges

  • Below 18.5: underweight
  • 18.5 to 22.9: healthy (South Asian)
  • 23 to 27.4: overweight, increased risk (South Asian)
  • 27.5 and above: obese, high risk (South Asian)
  • WHO international: 25+ overweight, 30+ obese

Waist size matters too

Fat around the waist carries more risk than fat elsewhere. Measuring your waist along with BMI gives a better picture. Talk to a doctor for advice on your own health.

Frequently asked questions

Why are South Asian cut-offs lower?

Research shows that people of South Asian origin face higher risks of diabetes and heart disease at lower BMI, so WHO suggests lower cut-offs for Asian populations.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

No. Muscle weighs more than fat, so very muscular people can show a high BMI while being healthy.

Can children use it?

Children need age and sex-based BMI charts. Ask a doctor.
