Formula
Example
A 20 × 10 ft wall, 9 inch thick, with 21 sq ft of openings needs about 1,580 bricks with 5% wastage, about 5 bags of cement and about 33 cft of sand at 1:6.
Choosing wall thickness
- 4½ inch: internal partition walls
- 9 inch: outer walls and load-bearing walls in most houses
- 13½ inch: boundary walls and heavier load-bearing walls
Buying tips
Bricks are sold per thousand, and quality varies by kiln. Check that bricks are well burnt, give a ringing sound when struck, and do not crumble. Order 5–10% extra for breakage.
