Formula
Example
If 24k gold is Rs 300,000 per tola, 22k is Rs 275,000 per tola. A 2-tola 22k set is worth Rs 550,000 before making charges.
How gold is priced in Pakistan
Jewellers quote a rate per tola for 24 karat gold, set daily by sarafa associations and linked to the world price and the dollar rate. Lower karat gold is cheaper in proportion to its purity: 22k is about 91.6% gold, 21k is 87.5% and 18k is 75%.
Weights used by jewellers
- 1 tola = 11.6638 grams
- 1 tola = 12 masha
- 1 masha = 8 ratti
- 10 grams ≈ 0.857 tola
Making charges and deductions
Making (bannai) is added when you buy, either as a fixed amount, per tola or as a percentage. When you sell, many jewellers deduct for wastage and do not pay back the making, so you get less than the purchase price. Ask for both figures before you buy.
