Formula
Example
To reach Rs 1.5 million in 3 years with Rs 200,000 already saved and a 10% return, you need about Rs 29,450 a month.
Set a clear goal
Write down the amount, the date and what it is for: Rs 15 lakh for a car in 3 years, or Rs 25 lakh for a wedding in 2 years. A clear goal makes it easier to keep saving every month.
Add inflation to the target
A car that costs Rs 30 lakh today will likely cost more in three years. Increase your target by expected price rises, then let the calculator work out the monthly saving.
Ways to save the monthly amount
- Move the amount to a separate account on salary day
- Join a committee (kamati) for discipline, using our committee calculator to plan your turn
- Put windfalls such as bonuses straight into the goal
- Review the plan every six months

Frequently asked questions
What if I keep the money at home?
Set the return to 0. The tool then divides what you still need by the number of months.
Should I keep savings in a bank or at home?
Cash at home earns nothing and loses value to inflation. A savings account, term deposit or fund earns profit, though returns vary.
How much should I save each month?
A common rule is to save at least 10–20% of take-home pay, but your goal and timeline decide the real number.
