Emergency Fund Calculator

Find the right size for your safety net. List your essential monthly costs - housing, utilities, food, transport, insurance and minimum debt payments - then choose how many months to cover. You will see your goal, how much is left to save and how many months it will take.

How to use the Emergency Fund Calculator

  1. Enter your essential monthly expenses.
  2. Choose how many months to cover.
  3. Enter what you already have saved.
  4. Enter how much you can add each month.

Formula

Emergency fund goal = essential monthly expenses × months of cover

Example

Essentials of $3,650 a month × 6 months = a $21,900 goal. With $3,000 saved and $500 a month, it takes about 38 months.

How many months?

  • 3 months - steady job, dual income, few dependents
  • 6 months - the usual recommendation
  • 9-12 months - one income, children, freelance or commission pay

Where to keep it

A high-yield savings account or money market account at an FDIC or NCUA insured bank: safe, separate from spending money, and available within a day or two.

Frequently asked questions

Should I save or pay off debt first?

Many people build a starter fund of $1,000-$2,000 first, then pay off high-interest debt, then finish the full fund.

Should I invest my emergency fund?

No. It should be safe and easy to reach - not in stocks.

What counts as an emergency?

Job loss, medical bills, urgent car or home repairs - not holidays or sales.

Do I count non-essential spending?

No. In an emergency you would cut it, so only essentials count.
