USA: Retirement & savings
Retirement Calculator
Check whether your savings are on track. Enter your age, savings, monthly contributions and the income you want in retirement. The calculator adjusts for inflation and Social Security and works out the nest egg you need, what you are likely to have, and how much more to save each month if there is a gap.
How to use the Retirement Calculator
- Enter your age, retirement age and how long the money must last.
- Enter savings and how much you save each month.
- Enter the monthly income you want and expected Social Security.
- Set returns before and during retirement, and inflation.
Formula
Example
A 35-year-old with $60,000 saved and $800 a month at 7% could have about $1.46 million at 65. Needing $5,000 a month (today's money) with $2,000 from Social Security, the target is about $1.73 million - so saving about $219 more a month closes the gap.
Rules of thumb
- Save 15% of income for retirement, including any match
- Aim for about 1× salary saved by 30, 3× by 40, 6× by 50, 8× by 60
- Plan to replace 70-80% of pre-retirement income
Social Security
Check your personal estimate at ssa.gov. Claiming at 62 cuts benefits permanently; waiting until 70 raises them.
