Roofing Calculator

Estimate a new roof. Enter the house footprint and overhang, choose the roof pitch and waste factor, and get the roof area, number of squares, shingle bundles, underlayment rolls and a cost estimate.

How to use the Roofing Calculator

  1. Enter house length and width.
  2. Add the overhang.
  3. Choose the roof pitch.
  4. Enter waste % and installed price per square.

Formula

Roof area = footprint × pitch factor × (1 + waste) Pitch factor = √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²) · 1 square = 100 sq ft

Example

A 50 × 30 ft house with 12 in overhang and a 6/12 pitch: about 1,860 sq ft of roof; with 12% waste about 20.8 squares and 63 bundles.

Typical roof costs

Asphalt shingle roofs in the US commonly cost $450-$700 per square installed, depending on region, tear-off and roof complexity. Metal roofs cost more.

How to find your roof pitch

Pitch is how many inches the roof rises for every 12 inches it runs horizontally. Place a level 12 inches long against the roof and measure straight up to the roof surface - 6 inches means a 6/12 pitch. Steeper roofs have more surface area for the same house size, so they need more material.

What is included in a roof estimate

  • Shingles or other roofing (by the square)
  • Underlayment and ice-and-water shield
  • Drip edge, ridge caps and starter strips
  • Flashing around chimneys and vents
  • Tear-off and disposal of the old roof

Flat roofs

Most homes in Pakistan have flat concrete roofs. For those, the roof area is simply length × width, and waterproofing or heat-proofing is usually priced per square foot rather than per square.

Frequently asked questions

How many bundles per square?

Usually 3 for standard architectural shingles.

What pitch is my roof?

Measure the rise over 12 inches of run.

Does this include tear-off?

Ask roofers to include removal of old layers and disposal.

Is a 12/12 roof harder?

Steep roofs need extra safety equipment, which raises labor cost.

What does “square” mean?

One roofing square covers 100 square feet.

How much waste should I add?

About 10% for simple gable roofs and 15% or more for roofs with valleys and dormers.
