How to use the Square Footage Calculator

1. Measure each area in feet.
2. Pick its shape and enter the sizes.
3. Add more areas for L-shaped rooms or whole floors.
4. Enter a price per sq ft for a cost estimate.

Example

A 18 × 14 ft living room (252 sq ft) plus a 12 × 12 ft bedroom (144 sq ft) = 396 sq ft.

Odd-shaped rooms

Split an L-shaped room into two rectangles and add them. For a bay window, add a triangle or rectangle for the bump-out.

Square feet, marla and kanal

In Pakistan, plots and houses are usually measured in marla and kanal, while flooring, paint and construction are priced per square foot. One marla is commonly 225 square feet in housing societies, and 1 kanal is 20 marla. Use this tool for room areas and the marla converter for plot sizes.

Using square footage for costs

• Flooring and tiles - price per square foot of floor
• Construction - grey structure and finishing are often quoted per square foot of covered area
• Rent - commercial space is often priced per square foot per month
• Painting - uses wall area, not floor area

Measuring a whole house

Measure each room and corridor separately and add them. Covered area normally includes walls; carpet area includes only the usable floor. Ask which one a builder or agent is using before comparing prices.
