What Is a Good Typing Speed? WPM by Job, and How to Type Faster in English and Urdu
Typing speed shows up in job tests, freelancing work and everyday productivity. Here is what a good words-per-minute score looks like, how it is measured, and a simple plan to get faster.

How WPM is measured
Typing tests count a “word” as five characters, including spaces. Net WPM counts only correct characters: if you type 260 correct characters in one minute, that is 52 WPM. Accuracy is correct characters divided by characters typed.
What is a good speed?
- Under 25 WPM - beginner
- 25-40 WPM - average
- 40-60 WPM - good; comfortable for most office work
- 60-80 WPM - fast; data entry, coding, transcription
- 80+ WPM - professional level
What jobs ask for
Many administrative and customer service roles ask for 35-45 WPM. Data entry and transcription roles often ask for 60 WPM or more with high accuracy. For freelance writing and virtual assistance, accuracy matters as much as speed - clients notice typos.
A 15-minute daily practice plan
- Two minutes of warm-up on the home row (ASDF JKL;).
- Five minutes of slow, accurate typing - no looking at the keyboard.
- Five minutes on real text: emails, articles or code you actually write.
- One timed test to track progress, logged once a week.
Typing in Urdu
Urdu typing is a valuable skill for content writers, journalists and anyone posting for Pakistani audiences. A phonetic keyboard maps English letters to Urdu sounds - p gives پ, k gives ک, Shift+T gives ٹ - so you can start immediately without memorizing a new layout. Practise with Urdu passages to build speed.
After typing: count and tidy
Check word counts for assignments and posts, fix capitalization in one click, and keep documents tidy before sending.
Accuracy first. If your accuracy is under 95%, slow down - speed builds naturally once your fingers stop making mistakes.
