Example
A single person earning $75,000 in Texas, paid every two weeks with 5% to a 401(k), takes home about $2,170 per paycheck.
Why your paycheck may differ
- Your W-4 choices (extra withholding, dependents)
- City or county income tax (for example New York City or Philadelphia)
- State disability or family-leave contributions
- Bonuses, which are often withheld at a flat 22%
Raise your take-home pay
- Update your W-4 if you got a big refund last year
- Use pre-tax accounts like 401(k), HSA and FSA
- Check you are not paying for benefits you do not use
