Sales Tax Calculator (USA)

Find the total price with sales tax, or the tax hidden inside a price, for any US state. Choose the state to fill in its base rate, add your local rate, and switch between “before tax” and “including tax”.

How to use the Sales Tax Calculator (USA)

  1. Enter the price.
  2. Choose the state - its base rate is filled in.
  3. Add the city or county rate for your area.
  4. Pick whether the price is before tax or includes tax.

Formula

Tax = price × (state rate + local rate) Price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate)

Example

A $100 purchase in California at the 7.25% state rate plus a 2.25% local rate costs $109.50.

States with no statewide sales tax

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Some Alaska towns still charge local sales tax.

For sellers

Online sellers may need to collect tax in states where they pass that state's economic nexus threshold (often $100,000 in sales). Marketplaces such as Amazon and Etsy usually collect it for you.
